Botulinum toxin vs. Filler!

When talking to friends and family, I find that most people are confused about the difference between botulinum toxin.

What is botulinum toxin?

Think of it as medicine that you inject into the skin/muscles to stop muscles from moving. This, in turn, prevents dynamic facial movements (think get rid of frown lines, crow's feet etc). It acts by paralyzing ANY muscles. In aesthetics, it is commonly use to paralyze the muscles that animate the face. There are 4 different brands of the toxin available (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Newtox). I'll save the pros/cons and similarities/differences of each for a different post. By paralyzing certain muscles of the face, we can help prevent wrinkles from forming and soften the wrinkles we already have.

What is filler?

Filler is a gel substrate (most commonly hyaluronic acid) that helps restore volume. As we age, we lose volume in our soft tissue (muscle/fat) and the bone in our face. Yes, you read that right, bone is an an organ that changes as we age. These aging changes cause tissue deflation and descent. Put simply, as my mentor used to say, we are all grapes that turn into raisins over time. Filler helps to reverse that affect and restore the volume loss.
